New laws governing the microchipping of dogs has recently come into force and local MP Michael Tomlinson is urging all residents to ensure that their pets are microchipped.
The new laws require all dogs to be microchipped and their details kept updated on an authorised database. The changes aim to make it easier to reunite dog owners with their pets if they are stolen or lost. It will also allow the police and local authorities to tackle irresponsible dog owners.
Michael said “We are a nation of dog lovers and the vast majority of dog owners are very responsible. I welcome these changes as it will make it easier to trace dog owners and will deter those who seek to steal beloved pets. I am urging all residents who have not yet microchipped their dog to do so without delay. Local councils will be able to assist you in finding the best place to get your pet microchipped.”
The new rules apply to all dogs, regardless of their age. However, if you believe that your pet is not healthy enough then it is possible to get an exemption via your vet.
