In October last year the Government announced investment of over £200 million per year over the next 3 financial years for the holiday activities and food programme (HAF). BCP Council were awarded just over £1 million of this, with Dorset Council receiving just under £1 million in funding.
The money is so that local authorities can provide free holiday provision including healthy food and fun activities for children who receive benefits-related free school meals, or who may be at risk or vulnerable.
Michael went to visit some of the groups running these activities in BCP and Dorset, to chat to the staff, and meet some of the children.
Michael said
It was fantastic to see some of the activities on offer, and hear from the children about the fun they were having. I particularly enjoyed playing hangman and cricket when I visited two schemes! It’s clear that the children are getting huge benefits from the Holiday Activities and Food programme, and from quieter crafty activities, to sport and swimming, there is a brilliant range of things to do.
