Michael visited the charity HomeStart in Dorset. Over the last year Homestart South East Dorset have helped 218 families and 479 children, with a small team of employees and a huge team of volunteers!
Most of their referrals come through Health Visitors and they run weekly groups for the most vulnerable families. Many of those parents helped go on to become volunteers themselves and gain valuable life skills and experiences which they can then pass on. The training offered to volunteers is so comprehensive that it is hugely valued and many volunteers go on to work in social services after their time with Homestart.
The feedback from families helped is incredibly positive, and Homestart are always looking for volunteers. The typical time commitment is 1-2 hours per week over a 6 month period per family, and Homestart will match families with the volunteer to whom they feel the family would be best suited.
