Speaking during questions to the Church Commissioner, Michael Tomlinson raised the plight of St Mary's Church in Lytchett Matravers which faces huge financial pressure to install a suitable heating system in the 11th century church building. The Church Commissioner has now offered to meet with Michael to hear more about the challenges facing St Mary's.
Michael said "It is vital that we help our small local churches maintain their buildings, as they are a key part of our heritage and often need large amounts of investment that small congregations simply cannot afford."
Michaels support has been well received by local residents who have been volunteering at the church. Bill Carter, Chairman of the Church Fabric team said “We are delighted that Michael Tomlinson is raising this complex issue with the Church Commissioners highlighting our struggle to install appropriate heating in the eleventh century church building. Rural churches are a valuable asset to the history and community of villages but are becoming an increasing burden to their congregations.”
