Michael used his question to the prime Minister during last week’s PMQs to highlight a new initiative in honour of Jo Cox.
The Prime Minister joined local MP Michael Tomlinson in backing the Great Get Together initiative in honour of former MP Jo Cox.
During Prime Ministers Questions, Michael highlighted the initiative that aims to see 10 million people take part in events across the country on the weekend of 17th & 18th June 2017. He urged communities to host events to mark one year since the tragic murder of the former MP for Bately & Spen. The initiative has been started by Jo Cox’s husband Brendan.
Michael said “the aim of this Great Get Together, as it has been called, is for more than 10 million people across the country to come together as communities and neighbours for events such as street parties, picnics and even bake offs. I was pleased that the Prime Minister joined me in agreeing that such events and moments of national reflection and celebration in our communities will be a fitting tribute to Jo and will remind us all that, as she herself said, we have far more things in common than things that divide us.”
The Great Get Together is being backed by organisations such Help for Heroes, NSPCC, The Scouts & Girl Guides and also has the backing of the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is hoped that 100,000 events will take place over the weekend. If any communities would like more information they can sign up via the website at https://greatgettogether.org/
