Michael Tomlinson has welcomed today's announcement by Michael Gove about the details of the Home for Ukraine Sponsorship scheme.
UK individuals, charities, community groups and businesses can now record their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war through the government’s new 'Homes for Ukraine' scheme. Phase 1 of the scheme will focus on those who are offering accommodation for named contacts, with Phase 2 following for community groups and residents who need to be matched to families.
Key points for this scheme include:-
- there is no limit to how many applicants there can be to this scheme
- a person of any nationality or immigration status can register - the only caveat being that their visa has at least 6 months left on it
- individual sponsors will be asked to provide homes or a spare room rent-free for as long as they are able, with a minimum stay of 6 months.
- the Government will pay a £350 per month per household to support costs. This is tax free, does not impact benefits or Council Tax status.
- Those who have a named Ukrainian they wish to sponsor should contact them directly and prepare to fill in a visa application, with the application launching on Friday 18 March.
- Ukrainians arriving in the UK under this scheme will be granted 3 years leave to remain, with entitlement to work, and access benefits and public services.
- Applicants offering accommodation will be vetted and will need to undergo security checks.

Several constituents and organisations have asked me about the possibility of hosting refugees from Ukraine in their homes. I'm delighted that we have put a mechanism in place for this to happen, with appropriate checks and support for hosts and refugees.
