The Prime Minister has appointed Michael as HM Solicitor General for England and Wales.
As HM Solicitor General, Michael’s job is to support the Attorney General in his role. The responsibilities will include:
- Deputising for the Attorney General and responsible for such matters as the Attorney General delegates to him
- Providing support to the Attorney General in his superintendence of the Government Legal Department, the Crown Prosecution Service, HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate and the Serious Fraud Office
- Providing support to the Attorney General on civil litigation and advice on civil law matters and on the public interest function
The Attorney and Solicitor General provide legal advice to government, and answer questions about their work in Parliament. They may also look at sentences which may be too low, and examine cases of contempt of court. They do not provide legal advice to members of the public or business.
Following his appointment, Michael said:
"It is a great honour to have been asked to be the Solicitor General for England and Wales. I am looking forward to working with the Attorney General at the heart of government in this important role.”
