Michael went to France, to see first-hand the Franco-British co-operation that is being done to combat smuggling networks and illegal Channel crossings.
Last year this joint work reduced Channel crossing by 36%, but there is still more to be done. Michael met with Bertrand Gaume, prefect of Hauts De France to discuss the cross-border work. Using state-of-the-art technology, stronger intelligence and tougher measures the two countries are working together to break the business model of evil people smuggling gangs.
Michael said:
People are dying. The compassionate thing to do is to stop these gangs from risking people’s lives.
