Diary of Work Experience
Working in a constituency office over the last four days has been an amazing opportunity and relevant to my politics course at A-level. The work the staff set was insightful to what working in a constituency office is like and both Frances and Laura were really friendly and answered any questions I had.
On the first day, I met another work experience student Connor and the first task we were set was cutting out appropriate articles from local newspapers. This was followed by writing an article for the website on Michael’s new job role (Vice Chamberlain of Her Majesty’s Household). Other tasks included deciding how to respond to constituents’ letters or emails which involved drafting a response and researching the topic discussed. I also did some all-important shredding!
On Wednesday, we had an action-packed day at the Houses of Parliament in London. Firstly, we went on a personal tour and then were privileged watched PMQs from the gallery. This part of British politics is usually a lively debate and this PMQs was particularly so given the events of the preceding week.
In the afternoon, I attended a debate on careers opportunities with some other work experience students. We also saw Michael’s office and London staff who were very welcoming and went out of their way to help us.
The next day included using The Policy Research Unit (PRU) in order to respond to constituents’ questions or concerns. We then planned a debate on whether cannabis should be legalised which we presented on Friday. I took the stand against decriminalising the drug. All of us in the office then created our own fantasy cabinets which were incredibly funny!
This week has been thrilling, informative, fun and one I will never forget.
